New Directions in the Philosophy of Mathematics: An Anthology by Thomas Tymoczko,
The traditional debate among philosophers of mathematics is whether there is an external mathematical reality, something out there to be discovered, or whether mathematics is the product of the human mind. This provocative book, now available in a revised philosophy of mathematics and expanded paperback edition, goes beyond foundationalist questions to offer what has been called a "postmodern" assessment of the philosophy of mathematics--one that addresses issues of theoretical importance in terms of mathematical experience. By bringing together essays of leading philosophers, mathematicians, logicians, philosophy of mathematics and computer scientists, Thomas Tymoczko reveals an evolving effort to account for the nature of mathematics in relation to other human activities. These accounts include such topics as the history of mathematics as a field of study, predictions about how computers will influence the future organization of mathematics, philosophy of mathematics and what processes a proof undergoes before it reaches publishable form. This expanded edition now contains essays by Penelope Maddy, Michael D. Resnik, philosophy of mathematics and William P. Thurston that address the nature of mathematical proofs. The editor has provided a new afterword philosophy of mathematics and a supplemental bibliography of recent work.

The Search for Mathematical Roots, 1870-1940: Logics, Set Theories, and the Foundations of Mathematics from Cantor Through Russell to Godel by Ivor Grattan-Guinness, X

The Search for Mathematical Roots, 1870-1940: Logics, Set Theories, and the Foundations of Mathematics from Cantor Through Russell to Godel by Ivor Grattan-Guinness, X
While many books have been written about Bertrand Russell's philosophy philosophy of mathematics and some on his logic, I. Grattan-Guinness has written the first comprehensive history of the mathematical background, content, philosophy of mathematics and impact of the mathematical logic philosophy of mathematics and philosophy of mathematics that Russell developed with A. N. Whitehead in their "Principia mathematica (1910-1913)." This definitive history of a critical period in mathematics includes detailed accounts of the two principal influences upon Russell around 1900: the set theory of Cantor philosophy of mathematics and the mathematical logic of Peano philosophy of mathematics and his followers. Substantial surveys are provided of many related topics philosophy of mathematics and figures of the late nineteenth century: the foundations of mathematical analysis under Weierstrass; the creation of algebraic logic by De Morgan, Boole, Peirce, Schroder, philosophy of mathematics and Jevons; the contributions of Dedekind philosophy of mathematics and Frege; the phenomenology of Husserl; philosophy of mathematics and the proof theory of Hilbert. The many-sided story of the reception is recorded up to 1940, including the rise of logic in Poland philosophy of mathematics and the impact on Vienna Circle philosophers Carnap philosophy of mathematics and Godel. A strong American theme runs though the story, beginning with the mathematician E. H. Moore philosophy of mathematics and the philosopher Josiah Royce, philosophy of mathematics and stretching through the emergence of Church philosophy of mathematics and Quine, philosophy of mathematics and the 1930s immigration of Carnap philosophy of mathematics and GodeI. Grattan-Guinness draws on around fifty manuscript collections, including the Russell Archives, as well as many original reviews. The bibliography comprises around 1,900 items, bringing to light a wealth of primary materials. Written for mathematicians, logicians, historians, philosophy of mathematics and philosophers--especially those interested in the historical interaction between these disciplines--thisauthoritative account tells an important story from its most neglected point of view. Whitehead philosophy of mathematics and Russell hoped to show that (much of) mathematics was expressible within their logic; they failed in various ways, but no definitive alternative position emerged then or since.

Canadian Society for History and Philosophy of Mathematics - The Canadian Society for History and Philosophy of Mathematics (CSHPM) is dedicated to the study of the history and philosophy of mathematics in Canada.

Philosophy of mathematics - Philosophy of mathematics is that branch of philosophy which attempts to answer questions such as: "why is mathematics useful in describing nature?", "in which sense(s), if any, do mathematical entities such as numbers exist?

Foundations of mathematics - In mathematics, foundations of mathematics is a term sometimes used for certain fields of mathematics itself, namely for mathematical logic, axiomatic set theory, proof theory, model theory, and recursion theory. The search for foundations of mathematics is however also the central question of the philosophy of mathematics: on what ultimate basis can mathematical statements be called "true"?

Philosophy of science - The philosophy of science is the branch of philosophy which studies the philosophical assumptions, foundations, and implications of the sciences, including the formal sciences such as mathematics and statistics, the natural sciences such as physics, chemistry, and biology, and the social sciences, such as psychology, sociology, political science, and economics. In this respect, the philosophy of science is closely related to epistemology, ontology, and the philosophy of language.
